Apart from the well known archaeological and historical places in Sri Lanka that has won the recognition of the international community, the island also hosts a myriad of untapped treasures. As always, we like to leave you with a lesser-known attraction that you may visit on your tour to Sri Lanka.
Situated at a climb of nearly an hour is the Devanagala Raja Maha Viharaya that resides majestically on top of the Devanagala Rock and is connected to the history of the island in several significant ways. Perhaps lesser known to travellers and tourists, Devanagala definitely warrants an expedition for its unique location, eye-catching elegance and historical significance,
Many ancient kings that ruled this country made it their primordial duty to protect and preserve Buddhism by giving state patronage and constructing temples and “sthupas”. King Valagambha, a famous icon in Sri Lankan history, is one such ruler, known for his contribution for the protection of Buddhism and the “sasana”. One of his creations is the Devanagala Raja Maha Viharaya located on the Devanagala Rock. The Devanagala Temple is associated with the struggle that Sri Lanka had with Portuguese colonists as well.
Since this iconic temple is located in the Devanagala Grama Seva Division of the Aranayake Divisional Secretariat, there are two ways to use. First is to travel all the way down the Colombo -Kandy Road to Mawanella and turn towards Hemmathagama Road and travel for about 3km. The other way is to use the Colombo-Kandy road to get to Hingula junction, drive down Alapatha Road and get into Hemmathagama Road.
Leave March to July out if you plan to visit the Devanagala Raja Maha Viharaya due to the monsoonal rains. October and November are also accompanied by frequent rainfall and strong winds. December, January, February, August and September are the dry periods and are ideal for the hike to Devanagala. The Dankirigala Raja Maha Viharaya and Asupini Ella are also situated nearby, offering a wonderful experience for any traveler.
