This time we thought we should take you closer to something mysterious – atleast one which is considered so in the eyes of the villagers. Rumassala is a mountain that sits in the famous down south city of Unawatuna – as you may know of as a haven for sandy beaches.
Let’s look at the etymology of Unawatuna – it bases itself on the Sinhalese word ‘Onna-Watuna’ meaning ‘’There, it fell!’’ and ofcourse in years to come evolved into Unawatuna, what it is today. So what’s so mysterious about this place? Well, there are quite a few ‘Falls’ associated with the area – and what we are going to speak about is actually entrenched in a famous legend of Ramayana. The core theme of the Indian epic Ramayana is a mythical encounter between Rama and Ravana. When Rama’s brother Lakshman was near-fatally wounded in battle, there was only scant hope about his life. The Prince’s life could be saved only if certain herbs could be fetched from the Himalayas. Speed was of high essence. Hanuman the Monkey God undertook the mission. At the site, he forgot the names of the herbs.
Guess what happened after that? He broke off a massive chunk off one mountain where the herbs grew. As soon as the chief physician extracted all the oils required he threw away the chunk of the mountain. The spot where it fell to the ground is believed to be Rumassala! Now, why Rumassala? And not some other name? Rumassala incidentally translates into ‘beautiful rock’ and is evidently so given its unique shape that one must see up close! Rumassala takes on the name Buono Vista now, a more modern alternative to its tongue twisting predecessor.
There are other places of high significance, a visitor to Rumassala should not miss.
A fascinating Buddhist Theme Park is evolving around the Elders’ Home in Rumassala.
A well-proportioned statue of the Buddha, is the predominant feature of this Park. Serene, tranquil and compassionate the statue of the Buddha contemplates the ocean below. The originator and the main implementer of this concept, Sarath Dias, had this sacred statue of the Buddha constructed to symbolise the miracle of whole series of Buddha statues, that mysteriously withstood.
