Hence, we thought the Knuckles Mountain Range would be a pretty good start for a holiday! Knuckles is an awe-inspiring mountain range that is situated in the North-East hills in Sri Lanka with a total of a massive 34 peaks! It takes its name ‘Knuckles’ thanks to 5 peaks taking the shape of a knuckle. Climate, terrain, vegetation and animal life are unbelievably diverse across its acres of foliage – which is a significant feature of the land. The mountain range is home to some very beautiful waterfalls, exotic fauna and flora, caves and patterned-landscapes.

How do you get there?

The entrance to the Knuckles Mountain Range is through Hunnasgiriya pass located in Kandy – Mahiyanganaya Road which is close to 52 kilometres from Kandy town. Your route would be Colombo > Kandy > Hunnasgiriya and followed by a left turn toward Loolwatta > 7 kms to Corbett’s Gap (4 km) > Meemure. Your trip from Colombo up until Hunnasgiriya is pretty decent, but there onward could be a bit rocky. Although a one day tour can be done, there’s too much to cramp into a single sunny day, and the best would be to camp at Knuckles for a thrilling adventure.

Best Time’s to Visit?

The best time to visit the mountain range is from March to May, June to September and December to February. These months have the lowest possibility of rain, although there might be some strong winds experienced during June to September.

Things to take

Like any hike, this hike too can get a tad bit challenging – so we advise you to pack up on water, sunscreen and food items to stay hydrated and full throughout your hike. Nature lovers are particularly requested to steer clear from taking single use plastic containers and other materials that would turn out useless during the hike for obvious reasons. Before taking the hike, it’s always best to keep the locals aware of your hike, just incase of an emergency. Although it’s perfectly safe for hikers, your encounter with wilderness could have you come face to face with tropical insects, so be mindful.
